We Can Make Sure Your Chimney Cap & Damper Are Installed Properly & Working Optimally

Here at Top Notch Chimney Sweep & Services, we work hard to keep your entire chimney system working the way it was designed to, for both the safety and enjoyment of you and your family. Unfortunately, without regular inspections, it can be difficult to know when and if your system has any missing, damaged, or defective components. And if you don’t know you have a problem, you certainly can’t repair it to prevent future damage. Two of the most commonly damaged or missing components (also two of the most important components) are the chimney cap and the damper.

Why Chimney Caps & Dampers Are So Important

Realistically, every part of your chimney system serves an important purpose and should be kept in good condition for the good of your system. But the chimney cap and the damper are arguably two of the most important components, and here’s why:

  • The Chimney Cap – The chimney cap is the part of your chimney that sits atop the chimney stack and crown and fits over the opening in the flue. Oftentimes, we find that the chimney cap has blown off during a strong storm, or that animal tampering or damage has left it ineffective. Unfortunately, without regular inspections, a missing chimney cap can go unnoticed by the homeowner for a good while. Without a properly installed and maintained cap, your flue could become the dwelling place of insects, animals, birds, water, and debris, all of which can cause extensive damage to the flue liner and masonry of the system.
    • Animals/Birds/Insects – When animals, birds, and insects enter your chimney, they bring with them flammable nesting materials, feathers, fur, feces, food, and disease. They can also get stuck in your system or make their way into your home. Both scenarios can be quite dangerous, but a quality chimney cap can keep this from being an issue.
    • Water & Debris – Water is one of the biggest contributors to chimney damage, and you should do everything possible to keep it out of your system altogether. Likewise, debris can enter your system if your chimney cap is missing or damaged, and can easily start a fire or lead to other damage.

If we find that your chimney cap has been removed, damaged, or was improperly installed, we can replace it with a new, fully functional and aesthetically pleasing option! We’re confident you’ll love our stainless steel caps, which come with a lifetime warranty!

  • The Damper – The damper has traditionally remained in the throat of the chimney system, and has served to keep gusts of wind from entering the home and conditioned air from exiting through the chimney. Typically, the damper is kept closed when the fireplace is not in use, but is opened when it is in use to allow smoke to swiftly move up through the chimney. Although throat dampers can last a long time when properly maintained, they commonly rust into place or break after years of use. When this happens, you could see a significant increase in your utility bills or notice drafts, smoke problems, and more. If you think your damper may be damaged or broken, we can replace it with a new one quickly and professionally.
